How EPF Interest is Calculated

EPFO calculates interest every month on the closing balance of your EPF account. However, the interest amount is credited once every financial year.

EPF Interest Calculation Formula

Monthly Interest Rate:

8.25 ÷ 12 = 0.6875% per month

The interest is calculated on the monthly running balance and added to the account annually.

EPF Interest Calculation Example

Suppose:

  • Basic Salary + DA = ₹30,000
  • Employee Contribution (12%) = ₹3,600
  • Employer EPF Contribution = ₹1,100 (approx.)
  • Total Monthly EPF Contribution = ₹4,700

Assuming continuous contributions throughout the year, EPFO calculates interest on the accumulated balance every month and credits the total interest after the financial year ends.

The higher your salary and contribution period, the larger your retirement corpus becomes.

When Will EPF Interest for FY 2025-26 Be Credited?

The Government has approved the 8.25% EPF interest rate for FY 2025-26. EPFO is expected to credit the interest amount to members’ accounts during 2026 after completing internal accounting processes. Even if there is a delay, members do not lose any interest because EPFO calculates it for the entire financial year.
